Portrait of the association.

BeaverWatch is a non-profit public-interest association that puts its field expertise at the service of monitoring, studying and protecting the beaver in Switzerland — mainly in French-speaking Switzerland.

Who are we ?

Official partner of the Direction générale de l'environnement (DGE-BIODIV) in the canton of Vaud, BeaverWatch acts as a beaver specialist in the field, working closely with cantonal authorities and nature stakeholders.

Through its structured network of observers and specialists, the association actively contributes to the knowledge, management and sustainable coexistence with the species.

Its observations are recognized for their reliability, methodological consistency and ecological relevance across the whole territory covered.

Skills & recognition

BeaverWatch is built on the experience of its members — some have been monitoring the beaver for more than 25 years, well before the association was founded — reinforced by a team of qualified biologists, sector coordinators and experienced observers.

Naturalist expertise

Our approach is grounded in field observations, rigorous methods and close collaboration between the range of skills brought together within BeaverWatch.

Official recognition

Cantonal authorities and consulting firms rely on our observations, whose rigor and scientific value are widely recognized as authoritative.

Participation in official bodies

BeaverWatch is directly integrated into the cantonal beaver monitoring network, recognized by the environmental authorities:

  • Our regional coordinators, sector coordinators and permanent observers actively take part in the canton's official observer networks.
  • The association takes part in the Groupe de travail Castor (the beaver working group), led by the DGE-BIODIV in Lausanne.

Technical advice & on-site support

Beyond its fieldwork, BeaverWatch is glad to make its experience available to municipalities, cantonal services, consulting firms or private parties facing issues related to the beaver or its habitat.

Cantonal mandate. The association is mandated by the DGE-BIODIV to carry out monitoring, protection and awareness-raising actions related to the species, across the whole cantonal territory.

They trust us.

Our field experience is recognized and regularly called upon: consulting firms, biologists and local authorities consult us for information, field data or technical support related to the beaver.
